Der Titel „Liebe als Passion“. Es erschien wenig später zur zehnten Wiederkehr von Luhmanns Todestag im November 2008 und war eine kleine Sensation. 1982 veröffentlichte der Soziologe sein berühmtes Buch mit demselben Obertitel. Dass die Grundlage dafür schon in jenen Jahren der weltweiten Protestbewegung vorlag, zu deren Slogans „Make love – not war“ gehörte, wusste kaum jemand. Der Herausgeber André Kieserling gibt in einer editorischen Notiz Auskünfte über das Manuskript. Demnach hat Luhmann es 1969 geschrieben, und zwar als Textgrundlage für eine der ersten Lehrveranstaltungen, die er an der Universität Bielefeld anbot. Bei der Lektüre des Bändchens und weiterer Neuerscheinungen zu dem Thema (eine Rezension erscheint in literaturkritik.de 7/2009) bin ich auf einen überraschenden Hinweis gestoßen. Das massenhaft verbreitete Buch des Wissenschaftsjournalisten Richard David Precht „Wer bin ich und wenn ja, wie viele“ (2007) enthält ein Kapitel zur Frage „Was ist Liebe?“ Es konzentriert sich ganz auf Luhmann. Prechts neuestes Buch „Liebe. Ein unordentliches Gefühl“ nimmt einiges davon wieder auf. Von dem frühen Manuskript Luhmanns weiß der Autor nicht, aber sein Kapitel enthält eine bemerkenswerte Information. Sie rückt Luhmanns systemtheoretische Rekonstruktion von Sprach- und Verhaltensregeln im Umgang mit Liebe in den Zusammenhang einer ganz anderen politik- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Szenerie Im Wintersemester 1968/69, berichtet Precht, habe Luhmann an der Universität Frankfurt Theodor W. Adorno vertreten und eine Vorlesung gehalten – mit dem Titel „Liebe als Passion“. Man male sich die Situation in ihrer Umwahrscheinlichkeit ein wenig aus Der Systemtheoretiker Niklas Luhmann, der in die Wissenschaftsgeschichte als einer der maßgeblichen Antipoden der „Kritischen Theorie“ einging, gastiert als Vertreter ausgerechnet von Adorno im lokalen Zentrum eben jener Theoriebewegung. Dass er dies ohne das Einverständnis von Adorno und Jürgen Habermas tat, ist auszuschließen. Doch frappierend ist an der Szenerie noch vieles andere Während Habermas in diesem Semester zusammen mit seinem Assistenten Claus Offe eine Übung über „Organisation und Bürokratie“ anbietet, doziert der Verwaltungswissenschaftler Luhmann, der 1964 mit seiner Abhandlung “Funktionen und Folgen formaler Organisation“ auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hatte, über Liebe, und dies in einem Semester, das in Frankfurt von studentischen Streiks, Seminarbesetzungen und Räumungen des Instituts für Sozialforschung durch die von Adorno und Ludwig von Friedeburg gegen die Studenten herbeigerufene Polizei geprägt war. Über die Geschichte dieses Semesters in Frankfurt ist viel geschrieben worden, über die Präsenz Luhmanns damals und über seine Lehrveranstaltung jedoch nicht. Hat Precht da etwas erfunden? Dafür spricht einiges. Dieser Autor hat ein treffliches Gespür für reizvolle Themen und historische Konstellationen, und er versteht es, diese anschaulich darzustellen. Aber die Zuverlässigkeit seiner Ausführungen hält sich in Grenzen. Im besagten Kapitel schreibt er „Im Wintersemester 1968/69 kommt es schließlich zum Eklat. Adornos Vorlesungen werden gestört, der berühmte Philosoph und Soziologe wird der Lächerlichkeit preisgegeben, und das Institut für Sozialforschung wird besetzt. Unter dem Eindruck der Ereignisse wirft Adorno über Nacht alle seine Veranstaltungen hin. Die Universität steht vor einem Problem. Wo soll sich in aller Eile ein Stellvertreter für das laufende Semester auftreiben lassen? Einer, der auch noch tollkühn genug ist, in den Hexenkessel der soziologischen Fakultät zu springen? Zur großen Überraschung aber findet sich tatsächlich ein Kandidat ein nahezu unbekannter 41-jähriger Verwaltungsfachmann aus Münster. Sein Name Niklas Luhmann.“ Adorno hat allerdings in diesem Wintersemester gar keine Vorlesung gehalten. Er hatte ein Freisemester. Die berühmt-berüchtigte Störung seiner Vorlesung erfolgte erst im Sommersemester 1969, in dem Luhmann in Bielefeld lehrte. Ist also die ganze Geschichte ein Produkt der Phantasie? Als ich einem Marburger Kollegen aus der Soziologie davon erzählte, konnte er an die Geschichte nicht glauben. Wenig später machte er mich jedoch auf eine ihm zuverlässig erscheinende Quelle aufmerksam, die zumindest einen Realitätskern bestätigt Luhmann hat im besagten Wintersemester tatsächlich Adornos Lehrstuhl vertreten. Ich bat dann André Kieserling um nähere Auskünfte, bekam die kurze Nachricht, dass ihm der Sachverhalt bekannt sei und die Information über das Thema von Luhmanns Frankfurter Lehrveranstaltung auf Ludwig von Friedeburg zurückgehe. Woher er das wisse, fragte ich nach, und wurde auf Dirk Baecker, den ehemaligen Schüler Luhmanns, verwiesen. Der wiederum antwortete mir „Alexander Kluge hat die Geschichte von Luhmann in Frankfurt am Main soeben umfassend recherchiert – von ihm erfahren Sie bestimmt mehr.“ Ein Gespräch mit Alexander Kluge ergab Er weiß darüber wirklich mehr. Und er verriet Die Ankündigung von Luhmanns Lehrveranstaltung sei unter dem Titel „Soziologie der Liebe“ oder „Liebe als Passion“ erfolgt. Sie sei mit einem der zahllosen Protestplakate überklebt worden, die damals in der Universität zirkulierten. Vier Studenten hätten schließlich daran teilgenommen. Seine Informationsquelle nannte Kluge nicht, wies aber darauf hin, dass er kein Wissenschaftler oder Journalist, sondern Schriftsteller sei. Es sei ihm daher erlaubt oder sogar geboten, sich durch Lücken des Wissens zum Phantasieren anregen zu lassen. Und Stoff zum Phantasieren biete die Geschichte in reichlichem Maße. Die Suche nach Spuren von Luhmanns Aufenthalt in Frankfurt habe ich abgebrochen. Im September erscheint Alexander Kluges Buch „Das Labyrinth der zärtlichen Kraft – 166 Liebesgeschichten“. Eine dieser Geschichten, „Küche des Glücks“, soll von Luhmann handeln und von der Frankfurter Universität in jenen Monaten, in denen er ihr Gast war. Nachbemerkung Vergegenwärtigt man sich noch einmal den Stil, in dem Jürgen Habermas und Niklas Luhmann Anfang der 1970er Jahre ihre gesellschaftstheoretischen Kontroversen austrugen, dann erscheint es nicht ganz so verwunderlich, dass Luhmann 1968 (vermutlich sogar mit Habermas als Fürsprecher) zur Vertretung des Adorno-Lehrstuhls eingeladen wurde. Bei allen Differenzen ist das hohe Maß gegenseitiger Anerkennung unverkennbar. Luhmanns Theorie, erklärt Habermas kritisch, „stellt sozusagen die Hochform eines technokratischen Bewußtseins dar, das heute praktische Fragen als technische von vornherein zu definieren und damit öffentlicher und ungezwungener Diskussion zu entziehen gestattet.“ Sein Interesse an Luhmanns Theorie sei aber keineswegs in erster Linie ein ideologiekritisches. „Meine Kritik gilt der Sache und nicht einer Funktion hinter ihrem Rücken. Nur auf diesem Wege darf ich hoffen, von Luhmann zugleich das zu lernen, was wir von einem umfassend gebildeten und überraschenden Geiste allemal lernen können.“ – Der Stil der Kontroverse ist, was Habermas angeht, für sein gesamtes sozialphilosophisches Werk typisch. Philosophieren heißt für ihn, Dialoge zu führen. Seine Intersubjektivitätsphilosophie hat, bis hin zu dem Disput mit Joseph Ratzinger, in der schriftlichen wie mündlichen Praxis des permanenten Dialogs mit wiederkehrenden und neu hinzukommenden Dialogpartnern und Problemfeldern die ihr angemessene Form. In allen diesen Dialogen markiert Habermas deutlich die Unterschiede der Positionen, zeigt jedoch zugleich ein intensives und ergebnisoffenes Bemühen, konsensfähige Gehalte in den Positionen des anderen anzuerkennen, von ihnen zu lernen und sie in die Weiterentwicklung der eigenen Theorie zu integrieren. Sogar die familieninterne Kommunikation scheint von diesem Stil geprägt zu sein. Die zwölf Vorlesungen über den philosophischen Diskurs der Moderne, in denen sich Habermas unter anderem mit Jaques Derrida und Michel Foucault auseinandersetzte, sind seiner Tochter gewidmet „Für Rebekka, die mir den Neostrukturalismus nähergebracht hat.“ Als einen vom wissenschaftlichen Dialog wahrhaft Besessenen hat ihn übrigens auch der Freund Alexander Kluge in seiner „Chronik der Gefühle“ portraitiert. „Der letzte Vertreter der Kritischen Theorie, H., ein empfindlicher Seismograph“, wird hier als ein Mensch geschildert, der „mit den Köpfen anderer zu denken“ vermag, so dass „er, wenn jemand den Mund öffnete, vorher wußte, was er sagen wird.“ Die Fähigkeit von Habermas, sich im Dialog auf andere einzulassen, grenzt in diesem Portrait an magische Kunst.
